THE AWARD WINNERS ARE……..
Last evening (23 October), at a glittering Hollywood
style event, held in the sumptuous surroundings
of Town Hall, Birmingham, the cream of West
Midlands' £5bn tourist industry gathered
for the regional Excellence in Tourism Awards
2007.
Shropshire swept the board with 13 awards
in total, including eight Gold Awards.; Warwickshire
had a total of 11 awards; The Black Country
received seven; Herefordshire six; Staffordshire
five; Worcestershire three, and Birmingham/Solihull
received two. In proportion to the number
of entries received, Hereford showed that
quantity is no substitute for quality with
six of their nine entries receiving an award.
There are Gold, Silver and Highly Commended,
winners. The Gold winner of each category*
automatically goes forward to represent the
region in the national Enjoy England Awards
for Excellence 2008, which are being held
in Liverpool in April.
The Awards are organised by Tourism West
Midlands (TWM), the strategic tourism board
of Advantage West Midlands (AWM), in association
with the national, Enjoy England Awards for
Excellence 2008.
Speaking to the capacity audience, TWM chairman,
Brian Summers, said: "It is rewarding
that so many individuals took the time to
submit nomination forms so that we could justly
recognise the efforts of those who help the
industry contribute £5bn to the West
Midlands economy." He thanked the event
sponsors, Flybe, Mitchells & Butlers,
BizTV, ITV Central, HeartFM, and Mechu@Summerow,
for their support, and added, "We received
some outstanding entries this year with some
notable improvements in standards. The nominations
short-list created much debate among the judges
before a consensus was reached on the overall
finalists."
There ceremony was hosted by local TV and
radio presenters, Sarah-Jane Mee and Ed James. The

* Because of the criteria set by Visit Britain,
the Gold Award Winner of the Large Hotel/Townhouse
of the Year 2007 Award category, will not
automatically qualify for the national awards.
Nevertheless, the judges were satisfied with
the overall high standard of applications.
